Fra Lippo Lippi adds 2nd date to 2023 Philippine concert

Philippine-based promoter DMC Philippines has recently announced that Fra Lippo Lippi will be staging another show on June 17, 2023, at the Santa Rosa Sports Complex in Laguna.

The Norwegian pop act, headed by lead vocalist and keyboardist Per Sorensen, returns with a two-part concert that celebrates their legacy as one of the most iconic hitmakers of the new wave era.

Fra Lippo Lippi made a name in the ‘80s for producing classic tunes such as "Everytime I See You," "Beauty and Madness," "Stitches and Burns," "Light and Shade," "The Distance Between Us," "Angel," and more.

After bassist and founding co-member Rune Kristoffer decided to call it quits, Per Sorensen kept the band’s music alive through live concert tours all around the world, with the Philippines as one of its regular stops.

In 2002, Per Sorensen and his band released "Later," a chart-topping smash in Asia and the rest of Europe. He even managed to collaborate with Filipino R&B star Kyla on "Wish We Were Two," which garnered heavy airplay on various top 40 stations in Manila and major cities across the Philippines.

This year, he is set to headline the concert as the prominent personality behind Fra Lippo Lippi, performing some of the band’s greatest hits, as well as some rarities.

This event is supported by Steve Hovington of B-Movie, who will be performing with Fra Lippo Lippi’s Per Sorensen at both venues: The Theatre at Solaire on June 16, 2023, Friday, and the Santa Rosa Sports Complex on June 17, 2023, Saturday. The event is presented by New DMC Entertainment Production Management, Maui & Sons, and The Rail.

Throwback Shindig with The Company and Jon Santos

Groove back to the decades of golden music of the 60s, 70s, 80s and 90s in a concert driven by nostalgia and one that will tickle the funny bones. See the Philippines’ premier vocal ensemble on stage with a class act comedian in “Throwback with The Company and Jon Santos” on December 1, 2018 at The Theatre at Solaire.

Starting out as an out-of-college regroup, The Company has evolved in their 3 decades in the music industry. From singing the traditional genres, they decided to move to acapella and vocal jazz as a new challenge to themselves and for the novelty of the pieces. Living to its namesake, The Company reinvented their identities while maintaining the bond that they have developed in the years prior their success. The release of their singles “Everlasting Love”, “Muntik na Kitang Minahal” and the popular love song “Now That I Have You” which is often used as movie theme songs, or in wedding halls, have seemingly immortalized their names. The original members apart from Moy Ortiz, have moved on to pursue the next chapters of their lives but not without passing on the torch to their successors whom have kept their legacy alive and very much felt today.

A stark contrast to the steady melody of songs comes Jon Santos, a powerhouse comedian famous for his impersonations that imprint themselves into the mind. His satirical impressions of the country’s most prominent political personas are complemented by his quick wit, allowing such a seemingly hilarious number to become the controversial stirrer of important conversations. He has transformed himself to the likes of Former President Joseph Estrada, Sen. Miriam Santiago (+), and Batangas Governor Vilma Santos who he admits, is his favorite. Although he became known for his comedic prowess, Jon was able to establish his credibility as a theatre performer who can add more spunk to any character he portrays. He has performed as lead in “Priscilla Queen of the Desert”, and more recently, “Rak of Aegis”.

The Theatre at Solaire’s advocacy of bringing Original Pilipino Music (OPM) under the limelight means offering acts that the audience demands, but also presents ingenious collaborations. “This unexpected tandem will highlight another layer of OPM that goes beyond the tunes, lyrics and voices. The Company and Jon Santos together on one stage merges what the Filipinos love most – good music and witty comedy. You will witness a new wave of theatrics that’s as exciting but with more spontaneity and humorous reality jabs.” says Audie Gemora, Solaire’s Director for Entertainment.

With The Company’s vocals injected with Jon’s brand of comedy, expect a night filled with throwbacks with the best “retro” beats that will make you dance, laugh and remember the heydays of the past,

For tickets to “Throwback with The Company and Jon Santos”, you can call TicketWorld at 891-9999.

Music and Laughter concert called “Sana Tatlo Ang Puso Ko" at The Theatre at Solaire

Grand Leisure Corporation presents its second concert for its Music and Laughter series called “Sana Tatlo Ang Puso Ko,” featuring OPM legend Rico J Puno, sultry host-actress Giselle Sanchez, and singer-comedienne Marissa Sanchez, slated for November 23 at The Theatre at Solaire.

After the success of Music and Laughter concert top-billed by the Man with Many Faces and Voices Willie Nepomuceno and music icon Nonoy Zuñiga last July 27, at the Theatre at Solaire, Grand Leisure Corporation produces a sequel titled "Sana Tatlo ang Puso Ko," which will be headlined by OPM Legend Rico Puno, together with talented performer-comediennes Giselle Sanchez and Marissa Sanchez.

The massively entertaining show is set to happen on November 23, also at the Theatre.

Noted for his propensity for naughtiness whenever he performs, Rico says that “Sana Tatlo ang Puso Ko” is going to be full of surprises.

He adds, “It has the vibe of a real treat, that feeling that you don’t know what to expect. I always want to expect a show to be like that, spontaneous. If not, we should retire.

"You cannot explain magic, can you? This show will click not because I am part of it, but because it’s an evening that will make you anticipate every moment.”

Also known as Rico J and The Total Entertainer, the 65-year-old singer is famous for his on-stage performances infused with tongue-in-cheek comedy and adult humor.

Meanwhile, Giselle Sanchez was 22 when she and Rico J started doing shows together.

“I was branded the girl [version of] Rico Puno because I was also known for naughty jokes. But it was all always double meaning because I couldn’t mouth sexual words.

"After working with Rico Puno, I realized that my jokes were not naughty. Compared to him, I am clean and wholesome,” laughs Giselle.

“Rico will just say risqué words nonchalantly na parang wala lang. My colegiala sensibilities were totally shocked.”

For her part,  Marissa Sanchez got to work with Rico J in 2000.

He saw her performing at a hotel and told Marissa, “Kukunin kitang front act kapag nagso-show ako dito ha.”

Instantly, she learned one of Rico J’s secrets to a lasting career.

She recalls what RICO J told her when she was a newbie: “Kahit mahusay kang singer, kung wala kang rapport sa tao, you will not be able to connect with them. Kausapin mo sila, magpatawa ka [You have to talk to them, make them laugh].

Marissa remarks that Rico belongs to a music era in which the songs were more lyrical. “When he sings, you get the message of the song immediately,” she says.

Giselle agrees, “His songs are classics. All his jokes are phenomenal and funny. Even if it’s scandalous, the people who watch it are not offended at all.”

Rico Puno started in the business performing at folk houses and small clubs in Metro Manila. His first single was “Love Won't Let Me Wait,” while his first big hit was the Taglish version of Barbra Streisand’s “The Way We Were.” His other hit songs included “Kapalaran,” “Buhat,” “Macho Gwapito,” “Lupa,” “May Bukas Pa,” “Ang Tao'y Marupok,” and “Magkasuyo Buong Gabi.”

In 1976, Puno won Aliw Awards’ Most Promising Entertainer. Two years later, he was hailed as Aliw's Entertainer of the Year.

His Rico in Concert show in the ‘70s at the Cultural Center of the Philippines cemented his status as one of the leading Philippine pop stars.

Four decades later, he still sees performing as “a never-ending learning story.”

In his heyday, Rico had this tremendous “tough guy” appeal to women.

Giselle affirms, “When I was just six, my Cebu-based aunt was a big Rico Puno fan. I would tell her, ‘Tita, he isn’t really that handsome,’ to which my aunt would reply, ‘You should hear his voice.’”

Marissa looks up to Rico Puno. “The mere fact that we’re doing a show with him is already a big honor.”

Giselle says that “Sana Tatlo ang Puso Ko” is not to be missed because it’s going to be a combination of great music, good laughs, and gifted performers.

“Marissa is a talented singer and comedienne and a good dancer. Rico Puno is like an eternal star. I’m honored to be with these performers.”

Expect the unexpected on November 23, at The Theatre at Solaire, with Marissa’s soul repertoire and funny impersonations, Giselle’s sexy comedy and singing, and Rico’s ability to mesmerize and elicit guffaws of laughter.

“Sana Tatlo Ang Puso” is presented by Grand Leisure Corporation and StartUp Village, in cooperation with Solaire Resort and Casino.

Willie Nepomuceno, the King of Impressionism, and Nonoy Zuñiga, Pop Icon Headline “Music and Laughter” at the Theatre at Solaire this July

Live show aficionados will get a kick and a rush of nostalgia on July 27 8pm at the Theatre at Solaire when Grand Leisure Corporation brings Willie Nepomuceno and Nonoy Zuñiga together in “Music and Laughter.”

Two of the most formidable names in their respective fields of entertainment, the Man with the Many Faces and Voices Willie Nepomuceno and Pop icon and OPM hitmaker Nonoy Zuñiga have done shows together outside of the country but “Music and Laughter” marks the first time that Nepomuceno and Zuñiga will headline a concert together in Manila.

“Come to think of it, we've done shows together outside of Manila and we've crossed paths a number of times at the airport but with different destinations,” shares Nepomuceno who has performed before at the Eclipse Lounge also inside Solaire. “I am both excited and nervous about performing at the Theatre at Solaire.”

Zuñiga has done two previous shows at the Theatre at Solaire but with other artists. “This time I am excited to do a back-to-back show with ace impressionist, Willie Nep.”

Being the pioneer in the field of mimicry in the Philippines, Nepomuceno surprisingly finds Zuñiga, primarily a singer, “a natural humorist.” “His (Nonoy’s) songs are easily ‘singable’ that can appeal to all ages because the themes are universal. I particularly fancy his ‘I'll Never Ever Say Goodbye’ because everyone somehow passes through that sentimental episode in life, no matter how corny it may seem.”

Nepomuceno reminds us of a grand time when impressionists took their work seriously, painstakingly working on the characters they take on stage. “I really work hard at my craft, almost to perfection.”

In “Music and Laughter,” Nepomuceno showcases once more his unique brand of impressionism that has kept audiences packed in all his previous performances through a legendary career in entertainment. “My repertoire will consist of a blend of foreign celebrities and some local ones but this time, I'm veering away from the political satire which my audience has come to know me for---as a timely respite from the irritable summer heat of the season as well.”

Zuñiga welcomes the collaboration with Nepomuceno because he has always been a big fan of the latter. “Willie Nep is very professional in his ways and makes you feel at home performing with him. His impressions of Presidents Marcos, Ramos, and Erap (Estrada) are inimitable.”

Zuñiga is, hands down, one of the foremost Filipino balladeers of all time with a string of unforgettable hits, among them “Never Ever Say Goodbye,” “Kumusta Ka?” “Doon Lang,” “Love Without Time,” and “Fragments of Forever.” Never the kind to rest on his laurels, Zuñiga has just released his first digital single in support of VisPop or Visayan Pop; the song is called “Pero Atik Ra,” a duet with Jolianne Salvado.

As Willie Nepomuceno himself puts it, “Music and Laughter” is a show not to be missed because it will offer “pleasant entertainment and engaging humor.” Music and laughter are a magical combination that allows us to dream, think of the good times, and hope for better tomorrows.

This show is brought to you by Grand Leisure Corporation, tickets to “Music and Laughter” are available through Ticketworld or call 891-9999

"An Evening with Pilita" at The Theatre at Solaire

Asia’s Queen of Song, Pilita Corrales, icon and legend of the Philippine entertainment industry for the past 6 decades, goes on stage at 8 p.m. on November 17, 2017 at The Theatre at Solaire for “An Evening with Pilita”.

With Ms Corrales in the one-night-only concert will be the immensely popular AMP Band and the inimitable string section of the ABS-CBN Philharmonic Orchestra with Mel Villena as musical director. The exceptional combination of musicians will provide the big band sound of the 50s and 60s and a taste of the classics.

The show will profile nuggets of time in Pilita’s life and career. She will be joined by her daughter Jackie Lou Blanco and son Ramon Christopher Gutierrez, both TV and motion picture personalities in their own right; her granddaughter Janine Gutierrez, and her old friends and colleagues in the industry Nikki Ross and Angie de la Cruz, better known as the Wing Duo.

Pilita started singing in Spanish as a host of the radio show “La Taberna” on KZPI. Her career took off in Australia where she became the first woman to top the Australian pop charts with a song called “Come Closer to Me.” She was the first artist signed up by Astor Records. There is even a street in Victoria named after her.

In the early 60's, Pilita was back in Manila to pursue a musical career in her home country. At the same time as she recorded albums in Spanish, English, Tagalog, and Cebuano, Pilita was signed up by ABS-CBN to host and star in a long-running television musical show called “An Evening With Pilita.”

Ms Corrales has performed locally and abroad with stars like Sammy Davis, Jr., the Beatles, Bob Hope, Pat Boone, Frank Sinatra, and Julie Andrews.

When asked how she feels about the much-anticipated November 17 concert, Pilita says:
“It is exciting. I will be at The Theatre at Solaire, which is beautiful and the sound is world class.”

Pilita was given the well-deserved title “Asia’s Queen of Songs” when she became the first Filipino to win in an international music festival, named the Best Performer at the 1st Tokyo Music Festival in 1972.

She has received every award imaginable in the local music industry. All of these accolades and milestones in her colorful and celebrated life and career will be at the center of “An Evening With Pilita - the concert."

Carlo Orosa the show’s director explains: “We want to show a side of Pilita that a lot of the young people have not seen. She is the first Filipino singer to actually showcase the Filipino talent internationally. She is both an icon and a legend.”

Pilita is elated to be the next music icon to perform in The Theatre at Solaire’s continuing Icons Series after the sold-out and well-reviewed concerts of Basil Valdez and Celeste Legaspi, “The feeling is like you’re on cloud nine.”

Audie Gemora, Solaire's Entertainment Director says, “Solaire is home of OPM and what better way for us to establish this than to highlight ‘Icons of Filipino music.' Who can be more iconic that Pilita Corrales? Her distinct voice, performance style and image have regaled generations. She is the only one to have had numerous hit albums in Spanish, English, Tagalog and Bisaya. Anyone who has grown up watching “Bagong Kampeon” knows she has great personality and sense of humor. We cannot wait to have Ms. Pilita on stage at The Theatre Solaire.”

"An Evening with Pilita" is presented by Solaire Resort and Casino. For tickets, please call Ticketworld at 8919999.

Britain’s Finest : The Complete Beatles Experience

Speaking of nostalgia, take a nostalgic tip to Solaire on the 17th of October 2015 and let’s bring the 60s back to life with a Britain’s Finest concert and hop the night away with The Beatles tribute.

“The fab four” – when you hear that phrase only one band comes to mind: The Beatles. The Beatlemania of the 60s are the embodiment of the ideals shared by the era’s sociocultural revolutions and as the band steadily grew in reputation and popularity, armed with the growing sophistication of their songs, the British invasion begun.

Hit song after hit song and with multiple Grammy, Academy and Ivor Novello awards, this awesome British band has been catapulted to legendary icon status as one of the most influential people and in 2004 Rolling Stones magazine declared The Beatles as the ”greatest artists of all time.”

Now take a trip with me forward from the 60s and into this glorious place we call Now. Straight from Southern California and considered as the “most authentic” tribute band to the Beatles legend, Britain’s Finest takes centerstage bringing to life once again songs like “Hey Jude”, “I Want To Hold Your Hand”, “She Loves You”, “A Hard Day’s Night”, and “Twist and Shout” with their hauntingly accurate rendition, complete with costume changes to show their precise attention to detail, immaculately emulating The Beatles’ career. The high, positive energy of the band and the witty banter demonstrates the youthful enthusiasm the Beatles had during their several live performances in the 60s.

As the “closest thing to The Beatles since The Beatles” Benjamin Chadwick (Paul), Tyson Kelly (John), Robert Bielma (George), and Luis Renteria (Ringo) are all incredible musicians in their own right and note for note, Britain’s Finest hits the spot accurately every time with such precise vocals conveying a vibe that will have us leaping to our feet and bobbing our heads to the ghosts of comb-overs with sporting sideburns much like it was during the beatlemania days. Now if we can only make them show themselves in black and white, that would certainly bring it straight home because this tribute band can definitely stir up a kind of fresh, energetic rawness that only the original Beatles have managed to bring us in the past. Talk about an actual spiritual take over! McCartney and Ringo must be in nostalgia heaven.

Living up to its name, Britain’s Finest gives one of the most exceptional tribute concerts to The Beatles this generation. With their uncanny dead-on vocals, endearing persona, undeniable good looks, and witty onstage banter, this group of Southern California musicians effectively takes on the stage personas of John, Paul, George, and Ringo with every performance.

You wouldn’t want to miss this! Catch this band perform at The Theatre and find out for yourself why this group continues to win the hearts of audiences worldwide.

Asia Tour of SATURDAY NIGHT FEVER Aims to Bring Audience To Their Feet—And Dance in the Aisles

Remembering "Saturday Night Fever"? A huge commercial success, "Saturday Night Fever" significantly popularized disco music around the world and made celebrities like John Travolta famous. The Saturday Night Fever soundtrack featuring disco songs by the Bee Gees became one of the best-selling soundtracks of all time.

The younger generation has not had a chance to witness the impact of the movie 'Saturday Night Fever' made in the '70s. I'd be great to see a new generation of theatergoers dancing in the aisles to the timeless tunes of The Bee Gees,” says Patrick Bywalski, deputy chairman of Robert Stigwood Organisation Ltd. , which co-produces the upcoming Asian Tour of the hit West End and Broadway dance musical SATURDAY NIGHT FEVER alongside Atlantis Theatrical Entertainment Group (ATEG) and Ten Bridges Media Corp.

The dancing crowd doing the hustle is expected to spill out of The Theatre at Solaire Resort and Casino, where a '70s disco-themed party will take place at a nearby venue to aptly kick off the tour running in Manila (July 3-26), Kuala Lumpur (Septmber 1-15), and Singapore (September 25 to October 11).

“Since SATURDAY NIGHT FEVER opened in the West End in 1997, we've nurtured the musical around the globe with each production contextualized [and recontextualized] to please the local customs,” adds Bywalski. Apparently, the recent UK productions and the upcoming Asian Tour of the musical have been more fearless—definitely more provocative—than their sanitized predecessors in the West End and on Broadway by staying true to the authentic, gritty realism depicted in the landmark film.

“The film was, finally, so authentic...it was more of a documentary,” Karen Lynn Gorney, the actress who played Stephanie Mangano, the love interest of John Travolta's Tony Manero in the film, told Vanity Fair in December 2007. “We improvised for two weeks, so that by the time it came to filming, [film director] John Badham just shot what was happening. It wasn't acting.”

With the stamp of approval to reimagine SATURDAY NIGHT FEVER onstage for Asian audiences, multi-awarded stage director Bobby Garcia has set his eyes on reliving the authentic coming-of-age in a tough world story of the film—amid the backdrop of the pulsating strobe lights of the infamous retro '70s disco era.

For Garcia, nothing would be more authentic than asking Broadway choreographer and child of the '70s Vince Pesce to join his creative team. Pesce, who's a longtime associate choreographer of Tony winner Kathleen Marshall, grew up in the same neighborhood in Brooklyn, New York, where the movie was filmed. “I've a clear memory of the movement/dance and how it made us feel,” says Pesce.

Based upon music critic Nik Cohn's magazine article “Tribal Rites of the New Saturday Night,” which was published in the June 7, 1976 issue of New York, SATURDAY NIGHT FEVER tells the story of Italian-American Vincent (later renamed to Tony Manero) and his gang in Bay Ridge, Brooklyn who are stuck in dead-end jobs but rule the dance floor at the discotheque 2001 Odyssey. Vincent or Tony is a tough cookie; an outstanding dancer, his ultimate dream was to escape the mean streets of Brooklyn.

“I did go back and look at the movie again just to make sure I capture the gritty, dynamic, and social movement that shifted popular dance as we know it,” Pesce continues. “With that in mind, Bobby Garcia, our director, and I felt we needed to expand the dancing in the show and make it more relatable to modern audiences yet remain true to the original choreography. You'll get to see the hustle, Travolta's finger point, and lots of exciting disco dancing but much more is needed to be done.

“Today's sophisticated audiences are accustomed to intricate, dynamic dance styles on TV, e.g. 'Dancing with the Stars.' We have to deliver expanded dance sequences that will thrill. On the other hand, we also have to create a world of movement that doesn't only take place in the disco. Essentially, we need to capture the pulse, frustration, and energy of the streets of Brooklyn and the '70s social movements.”

A show that's heavy on the dance side yet demands authentic emotions onstage, a triple threat casting is equally crucial. “We auditioned for the roles of Tony, Stephanie, Tony's friend Double J, and a [Latin] dancer in N.Y.,” says West End and Broadway casting director Tara Rubin. “We were looking for great actors, singers, and dancers who seemed authentic to the show's time and place. We needed actors experienced enough to star in the show and play these iconic roles.”

Pesce adds, “The culture in Brooklyn is all about bigger than life and fun loving personalities. We didn't stop looking until we found them.”

At the end of the auditions, Brandon Rubendall (“Spider-man” on Broadway), Jenna Rubaii (“American Idiot”), and Nick Varricchio (“A Chorus Line”) were cast as Tony, Stephanie, and Double J, respectively.

Thespians Marie Rose, Rafa Giguion-Reyna, Yanah Laurel, Jamie Wilson, and Carla Guevara-Laforteza are also joining its 20-strong cast.

Besides Garcia, Pesce, and Rubin, Tony Award-winning scenic designer David Gallo, original lighting designer of SATURDAY NIGHT FEVER on Broadway Paul Miller, costume designer Eric Pineda, and musical director Ceejay Javier are also part of the show's first-rate creative team.
