THE DOS AND DON’TS OF BRITISH ROYALTY - Even the Queen’s family is subject to rules

Power, fame, and glamour—we, the commoners, can only dream of living the life of the most esteemed family in the United Kingdom. Possessing a regal title, however, comes with the obligation to follow certain codes of conduct.

Of course, there have been instances when royals have deviated from such guidelines, like wearing fur, eating shellfish, or being touched by non-royals—all of which are prohibited. Nevertheless, anyone who fancies marrying someone from the British crown family must learn these protocols as part of proper decorum.

Recent history can testify that marriage into royalty isn’t impossible, like Prince William’s wedding with Princess Catherine (née Middleton) and Prince Harry’s current engagement with American actress Meghan Markle.

For those who believe they have what it takes to become royalty through marriage, we list below some rules of etiquette to which the Queen’s family must adhere.

Bows and Curtsies

Greetings need not be complicated. In formal events, ladies greet with a little curtsy: one foot behind the other followed by a quick bob at the knee and a slight bow of the head. Gents only have to bow briefly from the neck. Deep curtsies and long pauses, however, show great respect especially when meeting the Queen.

Sitting Posture

Modesty is expected at all times even while sitting. Royal women shouldn’t cross their legs at the knee. Instead, they must keep their knees and ankles together, though they may cross their legs at the ankle for comfort. The “duchess slant” as popularized by Princess Catherine is another acceptable pose with the knees slanted to one side. In these three, hands must be linked and resting on one knee.

Holding a Teacup

No gentleman or lady deserves a royal title without knowing how to lift a cup correctly during tea time. The thumb and index fingers must hold the handle at the top while the middle finger goes to the bottom for support. Sipping must also be done on the same spot to keep the rim free off too many lipstick stains.

Dining Etiquette

Using silverware with the royals might seem daunting at first. For the basics, hold the knife with the right hand and the fork with the left. As for the fork, the tines must always face down, and should never be used to stab the food. Rather, food is balanced on the back of the fork when brought to the mouth.

Order of Precedence

Those wonderful royal weddings where everyone is neatly organized from the procession to the seating arrangement would not have been possible if not for a strict adherence to a specific order. At the head of the procession is the reigning monarch, followed by the entourage determined by order of birth, marriage, status of nobility, and other rules.

These and other rules have been passed down for generations in the history of British sovereignty. For a glimpse of these laws and customs, catch Reign every Tuesday at 9:00PM on Blue Ant Entertainment.

Filipina Singer Alisah Bonaobra Returns to The X Factor UK

Twenty-two-year-old Alisah Bonaobra won UK’s heart and made it back to the live shows on The X Factor UK. Viewers were asked to vote for an eliminated act from the Judges’ House round whom they want to come back and compete in the live shows.

On Sunday’s episode, it was a battle between the Boys and the Girls categories with the theme “Express Yourself.” The X Factor UK hopefuls performed a song of their choice related to the theme.

While introducing her wildcard winner, Sharon Osbourne was very thankful to the public for bringing Alisah back.

Alisah performed This is My Now by Jordin Sparks, which greatly impressed the judges and the audience. After her performance, the judges were on their feet and had nothing but compliments for her.

“That song is absolutely perfect for you because this is your now and you deserve to be back on the show. You always should have been on the show!” said Louis Walsh. “It’s almost like a winner’s song, and I love a power ballad with a key change from a great singer and you are a great singer! You’re a great performer. You got great soul and I love the way you fight back!” he added.

Nicole Scherzinger agreed with Louis and referred to Alisah as her little Disney warrior princess. “You just hiya-d and karate chopped all through that song! But you did it with grace. You did it with poise. You did it with strength. I freakin’ adore you!” she expressed. “I look at you and I’m like that’s my little ninja Filipina sister up there! You were meant to be up there, like [what Louis] said, this is your now, because that’s your stage, and you just took it tonight, honey!” she added.

“Everybody says in this contest that they really want this, and they really need to be here. I know your story. I know what you’ve gone through. And you know what? With a voice like yours, you’re gonna be here ‘til the end, Miss! I am so happy for you, so, so happy!” said judge and Girls category mentor Sharon Osbourne.

On the taped interview, Alisah called herself the “comeback queen.” She looked back at her journey where she was let go but asked to come back and fight for her spot at the Six Chair Challenge. Now she is back again as the wildcard winner.

When host Dermot O’Leary asked the judges who they thought won the night, the lady judges Nicole Scherzinger and Sharon Osbourne both favored Alisah.

Alisah survived week 1 of the live shows and will continue with her journey on the competition.

Watch out for Alisah’s next performances on The X Factor UK on RTL CBS Entertainment.

Alisah Bonaobra finallly secures spot on the Six Chair Challenge in the Girls of The X Factor UK

The 22-Year-Old Singer Was Asked To Give Up Her Seat, But The Audience Demanded To Bring Her Back

The X Factor UK journey continues for Alisah Bonaobra as she secured a spot in the Six Chair Challenge in the Girls category to be mentored by judge Sharon Osbourne in today’s episode of the show.

Alisah walked on stage in her red evening gown and performed a classic Celine Dion hit All By Myself, that drove the crowd, other contestants, and judges Nicole Scherzinger and Louis Walsh on their feet.

“Your style is very dated, it’s very cabaret for me, but you have this amazing gift, this voice, it’s huge.” Sharon told Alisah after her performance.

All the seats were taken when she performed but judge Sharon made sure she got one by making Taliah Dorto give up hers.

But getting a seat after performing was not a guarantee until all the acts finished their performances. Alisah knew this when Sharon made her give up the seat for Grace Davies. This decision shocked not just the audience but the rest of the judges as well.

Simon Cowell could not believe what happened and walked out.

Judge Louis Walsh also expressed his disbelief with the decision. “Oh no, no you can’t do that!”
The audience chanted loudly asking Sharon to bring her back, to which Sharon responded.

“Please guys, would you please give me time to receive the last two girls and then I can think about it?”

The Filipino-Australian hopeful Elysa V also secured a seat after her performance of Meghan Trainor’s Me Too, but after a while, Sharon made her give up her seat for the last act to perform, Georgina Panton.

All the seats were taken during this time, but the crowd is clearly not satisfied with the decision. For the second time, they chanted loudly asking Sharon to bring Alisah back.

“Okay you guys! Oh, you are so hard to please!” Sharon expressed. “Alright, I’m gonna bring Alisah back but I wanna hear a sing off with her and Scarlett, and Rai Elle.

The crowd got very excited and cheered really loud as soon as Alisah walked back on stage.

“Girls, I am so sorry to make you all do this, but what do I do when there’s so much talent here and the audience, I have to listen to the audience. But no matter what, I have two chairs and three girls.” Sharon told the girls before they start their second performance for the last chance to get a seat. “I want you to all do a sing off for me because you’re all so talented, don’t forget that!” she added.

Alisah, who had been crying since she walked back on stage was the last to take her chance on the sing off.

“Don’t be afraid, come on stand your ground” said Sharon before she starts singing.

Alisah showed how badly she wanted that seat and surprised everyone with her powerful version of Bang Bang by Jessie J, Ariana Grande, and Nicki Minaj. Making sure she hit all the high notes and aced the rap part of the song.

She made almost everyone stand from their seats, and judge Nicole Scherzinger even went up on the judges’ table and danced while Alisah was performing.

After her surprising performance, the crowd, and judges Nicole Scherzinger and Louis Walsh were all on their feet.

“Well Alisah, you showed me didn’t you?” Sharon exclaimed.

She then decided let go of Scarlett Lee, kept Rai Elle Williams, and had Alisah finally lock in one of the six chairs.

The judges then went up on stage to congratulate the girls who made it, where Sharon remained in awe of Alisah’s sing off performance.

“Where were you hiding that? Oh my Lord!” Sharon told Alisah.

The girls who are in the Six Chair challenge are Deanna, Alisah, Rai Elle, Grace, Georgina and Holly. They are all moving to the next round of the competition which is the judges house.

Filipino-Australian Singer Elysa V Moves To Individual Bootcamp Audition On The X Factor UK

Elysa V was the only rose among the thorns during the group bootcamp performance at the Sunday’s episode of The X Factor UK. Along with three guys El’Tee, Brad Howard and Sam Black, the group started with the song Locked out of Heaven by Bruno Mars.

Not long after the performance, Simon Cowell raised his hand and made them stop. “This is not working, this is a bad song,” he said. “I’ll tell you what we’re gonna do. We’re gonna judge this acapella,” he added.

When Sam Black struggled to continue with the song, judge Nicole Scherzinger encouraged the group to help him out, and Elysa took the lead in the part of the chorus.

After the song, the judges had a long deliberation on who should move to the next round. It was noticeable that the judges were having a difficult time deciding as it was a hard song.

After the judges’ long conversation among themselves, Louis Walsh talked to the group. “This has been so difficult guys because the song didn’t suit you. Some people were better than the others, but you can see [that] we’ve had a really long conversation about everybody,” he calmly said. “So what we’re gonna do is we’re gonna give you all a chance,” he added.

Upon hearing the good news, Elysa V gleefully jumped out of excitement and rushed to exchange hugs with the rest of the group.

Before everyone left the stage, Simon Cowell shared a few words. “It was partly because of the way you’re all with each other. This is the last pass you get because [as] you go forward tomorrow, it’s your own choices now, there’s no excuses,” he said. “I think you all behaved really well and we’re happy to give you all another shot tomorrow,” he added.

Elysa V and the rest of the group is moving to the individual bootcamp auditions which will define their chance for the Six Chair Challenge.

No Fury like a Celebrity Scorned, Tried and tested ways to offend a star

It’s one thing for reporters to ask celebrities about a few sensational tidbits—breakups, pregnancies, maybe some harmless gossip—to drum up interest for a simple promotional story; it’s another when they start asking questions that put the hapless star in a “bad light.”

Many famous personalities from actor Robert De Niro to pop singer Justin Bieber have had their share of cringe-worthy interviews that they’ve claimed to have made them feel upset. While it’s sometimes unclear why celebrities go on an outburst or walk out of an interview, there have been instances when questions got way too personal or were just plain provocative.

Bad celebrity interviews offer a valuable lesson in prudence: the best questions are perceptive, not intrusive. Let’s take a look at a few awkward moments that stars had to endure due to an interview gone astray:

Nicki Minaj

Hip-hop diva Nicki Minaj shut down an interviewer after the latter suggested that the singer “thrived on drama.” The remark followed the “ghostwriting feud” between co-label Drake and now ex-boyfriend Meek Mill, as well as the growing tension between rappers Lil Wayne and Young Thug.

Minaj was not having it: “What do the four men you just named have to do with me thriving off drama?” The furious songstress lashed out calling the interviewer “disrespectful” for “put(ting) down a woman for something that men do” before cutting the session short. The interviewer herself acknowledged her mistake: “Even though I had no intention of putting her down as a small-minded or a silly woman, she was right to call me out.”

Robert Downey Jr.

A promotional interview for the movie Avengers: Age of Ultron went awry for Robert Downey Jr. when questions started plumbing into the superstar’s supposed “dark periods.”

The reporter cited Downey’s past interviews where the actor had opened up about his relationship with his father as well as his former bout with substance abuse. By then Downey looked quite distressed in his seat, but the interviewer went on: “I just wondered whether you think you’re free of all that, or whether that’s still something…”

Downey didn’t let him finish: “I’m sorry, what are we doing?” He ended the interview abruptly then walked out saying, “It’s getting a little Diane Sawyer in here,” much to the reporter’s regret.

Cara Delevingne

A morning show began an interview on a shaky note with British fashion model and rising star Cara Delevingne after introducing her as “Carla”—twice—during a promotional segment for the movie Paper Towns.

The awkward start got worse after one of the anchors asked her if she had been “too busy” to read the book before taking on the role. Delevingne initially responded with a bite of sarcasm: “Uh, no I never read the book, or the script. I kind of winged it,” before saying she did read the book and thought it was amazing.

A second host then asked if she would have found it easier to focus if her schedule wasn’t so hectic. Visibly confused, the actress replied: “No, I don’t know where that comes from,” then saying “I love what I do . . . I’ve wanted to do this since I was young, so it’s not too hard.”

Things soon fell south when the anchors blasted Delevingne’s attitude by saying she looked “more excited” in other interviews and seemed a little “irritated,” eventually suggesting she “go take a little nap, maybe get a Red Bull.” In the actress words, that just went “too far.”

Filipina Singer Alisah Bonaobra awes the X Factor UK Judges with her performance of "Listen"

Alisah Bonaobra, singer from Manila, Philippines wowed all four judges of The X Factor UK with her version of Beyonce’s hit Listen on the seventh episode of the show. Her performance left judge Nicole Scherzinger in tears.

One of eight children, Alisah believed her talent is world class and took a chance of a lifetime in the competition. She flew to London with the help of her mother’s friend who helped them fund their plane tickets.

Accompanied by about 20 friends and family members, the judges could all hear the loud cheer of the group before she even walked into the room.

“I always think a lot of people from where you’re from [are] amazing singers” expressed by judge Simon before she starts singing.

Alisah confidently sang her heart out clearly impressing the judges with her talent. Not long in the performance, judge Nicole was already brought to tears. The half-Filipina judge could not help but show how amazed she was and even got on her feet to applaud her afterwards.

“This is not the best version of this song I’ve ever heard I’m not gonna lie to you,” said judge Simon Cowell. But there’s something about you I really, really like. Great, great, great energy! That was good; I really enjoyed that!” he added.

Judge Louis Walsh agreed and said, “I think she’s adorable! You’re a great singer, you’re a great person! It was a great audition, but there’s something about you that we really like.”

Judge Sharon Osbourne was almost speechless, her words were brief but sweet enough for Alisah “I just want to cry. Oh, it’s a yes from me!”

Judge Nicole Scherzinger, who was still in tears told the young singer, “I am crying because I come from very humble beginnings as well. You’re just gorgeous, you’re just this tiny little thing with a voice given from God, this unbelievable gift blowing everybody away. I connect with you and everybody and it’s a yes for you and all the Filipinos out there.”

Soon as she got her fourth yes from Judge Simon, her family and friends hurried in the audition room and exchanged hugs with her and all the judges.

Alisah will be joining the bootcamp with fellow Filipinos Gaga Lord, JBK, and Elysa V, who all got four yeses during the first round of auditions.

Two More Filipino Acts Impress Judges on the X Factor UK : Boyband JBK, and Singer Elysa V. are Moving to the Next Round

JBK, boyband from the Philippines, and Filipina-Australian singer Elysa V., took their shot at The X Factor UK and raised the Filipino spirit and flag yet again.

JBK performed Sam Smith’s Lay Me Down, a song well-loved by the judges. Their 24- hour flight paid off as they got 4 yeses from the judges in the 4th episode of the show today.

JBK

JBK members, Joshua Bulot, Bryan del Rosario, and Kim Lawrenz Ordonio, is the first Filipino boyband who made it to the show. Fans are hopeful that they make it far just like the Filipina girl group 4th Impact who joined the show two years ago.

After their performance, Judge Louis Walsh praised the group, “I love your dedication flying from the Philippines, it was good!”

Judge Nicole Scherzinger, who also has Filipino blood added, “You are making the Filipinos so proud right now”. This comment made the group really happy.

After Simon said “4 Yeses”, the boys could not contain their joy as they left the room running.

Another X Factor UK hopeful, Filipino-Australian, Elysa V., performed Fleur East’s Sax in full energy. Judge Nicole was so impressed that she flew all the way from Australia, and told her “For you, your mom, dad, everyone back home in Australia, it’s a Yes.”

Elysa V

Both acts are moving to the next level of the show joining fellow Filipino Gaga Lord, who also got 4 yeses from the judges last week.

RTL CBS Entertainment: What Makes A Winning Mentor At The X Factor UK?

Success isn’t always solely about talent or hard work. For aspiring singers at The X Factor UK, winning is also a matter of mentorship.
As mentors in their respective categories, judges play a huge part in guiding X Factor hopefuls from song selection to performance style ultimately so contenders can play the game to their strengths and win the crowd.
The UK’s most talked-about talent show has given us judges who’ve not only brought excitement to audiences worldwide for the past 13 seasons, but have also raised contestants to the top of the competition. Here we list down some of the crucial factors that set a winning mentor apart from the rest of the judging panel.

Firm, honest criticism
The truth may hurt, but an X Factor mentor must be willing to evaluate singing performance without watering down facts: vocal weaknesses, poor song choices, lack of originality, and strengths that can be honed and exploited. A little kindheartedness is always appreciated, though it shouldn’t get in the way of good, honest feedback when it’s needed.

An artist by their own right
Being an accomplished performer is an advantage that can give X Factor judges an edge when it comes to mentoring. Whether it’s about singing technique or the choreography, a top-charting artist with plenty of experience on stage and on camera would definitely have much to contribute to creating a performance worthy of a standing ovation.

Years in the music industry
A winning mentor doesn’t always have to be a singer to know what makes or breaks a performance. Years of working with recording artists and entertainers would allow an X Factor judge to build a wealth of knowledge needed to assess talent and help aspirants flourish as performers. A background in music production is definitely a plus.

Unwavering support
In a contest that stirs a lot of nerves, emotional support goes a long way to helping X Factor hopefuls feel confident in their talent as well as the hard work they’ve put in to advance in the competition. Even the slightest encouragement from a mentor can inspire contestants to believe in themselves more and do their best even in the face of an enormous audience.
This Season 14, who among our judges Simon Cowell, Nicole Scherzinger, Sharon Osbourne, andLouis Walsh will bag the title of “winning mentor” and raise the next biggest artist to the top of the charts? Catch The X Factor Season 14 every Sunday and Monday at 10:30AM with primetime encore at 9:00PM, same day as the UK, first and exclusive on RTL CBS Entertainment.

PERSUASION’S TOUGH BUT BEAUTIFUL ART Wining the mind game of influence takes more than mere logic

“Speech is a powerful master and achieves the most divine feats with the smallest and least evident body. It can stop fear, relieve pain, create joy, and increase pity.”

Such were the words of Greek sophist Gorgias who once taught the art of rhetoric and oration more than two thousand years ago. These words continue to ring true as our society becomes more polarized from politics to religion, and even science.

Today, it would take superb rhetorical skills to get people to consider your side of the argument. However, having a good grasp of logic and argumentation is not enough to win the crowd.

Many experts agree that underlying psychological factors play a key role in persuasion. This means that, on top of delivering your piece as factually and logically as possible, you also need to tap into the emotions and values of your listeners to gain their favor.

Psychology of persuasion

Dr. Robert Cialdini, Regents’ Professor Emeritus of Psychology and Marketing at Arizona State University, delves deeper into the psychology of persuasion in his book Influence: Science and Practice.

The book begins with the premise that people fall back to generalizations when making decisions to save time and effort in the face of information overload. Despite being given little thought, these generalizations form because they help people act in a more or less correct way.

Through numerous empirical studies, Dr. Cialdini identifies several principles behind this tendency. One of these is likability, which can be based on a person’s physical attractiveness or the compliments he or she gives. Even random similarities, such as having a similar-sounding name, can shape someone’s preference for another.

In another book co-authored by Dr. Cialdini titled Yes! 50 Scientifically Proven Ways to Be More Persuasive, an experiment by social researcher Randy Garner revealed that people respond better to those with names that sound similar to theirs.

The experiment involved two groups of participants. The first received a survey by mail from someone with a similar-sounding name. An example of this would be participant Robert Greer getting the survey from a ‘Bob Gregar’. The second received the same survey, but from someone with a non-similar name.

Of the first group, 56 percent completed and returned the form—almost twice as much as the second group where only 30 percent responded.

This and similar instances prove a point for Dr. Cialdini: People are more receptive to those who share characteristics with them whether in terms of looks, name, beliefs, school, hometown, and the like. Persuading them to your side, then, becomes a matter of exploiting this behavior.

A matter of justice

Dr. Cialdini’s insights may be meant for salespeople and advertisers, but playing the psychology game applies just the same in more serious situations, such as the courtroom.

Like all human beings, jurors are susceptible to influence. While the jury is sworn under oath to remain fair and impartial, it can be swayed based on the members’ shared values with the parties at court, or their disposition at the time of trial.

The way these unspoken biases are exploited is best exemplified by television show Bull. From facial expressions and hand gestures to the choice of clothes, protagonist Dr. Jason Bull (Michael Weatherly) understands that non-verbal language can be used to take advantage of unspoken preferences and values.

With his team at Trial Analysis Corporation (TAC), Dr. Bull does an extensive research on the jury involved in his client’s case and uses this knowledge to gain an edge. In the episode “The Fall,” for instance, his client managed to win the favor of an animal activist among the jurors by tricking the opponent to bring out his keychain during questioning. The keychain turned out to have a genuine rabbit foot charm—a seemingly insignificant item that would cost him the trial.

In another episode titled “E.J.,” Dr. Bull and his team won the jury by getting their client to sympathize with the opponent. By making the client come to her opponent’s defense, she appeared more likeable to the jurors.

Platinum-selling, Grammy award winning artist Kendrick Lamar is one of the rare artists who has achieved critical and commercial success while earning the respect and support of those who inspired him. A native of Compton, California, Lamar caught the attention of CEO Anthony “TopDawg” Tiffith who immediately signed a young Lamar to his label, Top Dawg EntertainmenBeside fellow Top Dawg Entertainment artists Ab-Soul, Jay Rock, and ScHoolboy Q—a group whose members, for the most part, appeared on one another’s mixtapes and t. albums. Overly Dedicated (2010) was the first Kendrick Lamar mixtape and fared well enough to enter Billboard’s R&B/Hip-Hop Albums chart that October. His first official album, Section.80 (2011), was released as a digital download the following year and entered the Billboard 200 at number 113. By that point in his career, Lamar’s reputation had been strengthened through guest appearances on dozens of tracks, and he had the support of veteran West Coast stars as well. During a 2011 con- cert, Dr. Dre & Snoop Dogg dubbed him “The New King of the West Coast,” a notion Dre endorsed more significantly by signing Lamar to the Aftermath label. Lamar’s good kid, m.A.A.d city was released in October 2012 and debuted at number two on the Billboard 200. Three of its singles—“Swimming Pools (Drank),” “Poetic Justice,” and “Bitch Don’t Kill My Vibe”—reached the Top Ten of Billboard’s Hot R&B/Hip-Hop chart, with each one enjoying lengthy stays on playlists of urban U.S. radio stations. More significantly, the album showcased Lamar as an exceptional storyteller capable of making compelling concept albums. When the nominees for the 56th Annual Grammy Awards were announced, Lamar was listed in seven categories, including Best New Artist and Album of the Year. Lamar remained active during 2013-2014, with touring as well as being sought after for several guest appearances by industry heavy-weights worldwide. In early 2015, he announced that his third album, To Pimp a Butterfly, was due in March with tracks featuring Snoop Dogg, Bilal, Thundercat, and George Clinton. A technical accident caused the digital album to be released eight days early, but it immediately earned rave reviews and topped the Billboard 200 with sales of 325,000 copies within its first week and has since been certified platinum. Lamar went on to win five Grammys for Butterflyincluding Best Rap Album. In 2016 Lamar released untitled unmastered., an album that closed the chapter on the Butterfly sessions. Reimagining ‘ever after’ for Beauty and the Beast’s finale

Only a few episodes remain before Beauty and the Beast’s series finale and time is running short for Cat Chandler (Kristin Kreuk) and Vincent Keller (Jay Ryan).

Pursued on all fronts by evil forces, the unlikely pairing of Cat and Jay has viewers wondering what ending awaits these fairytale-inspired characters.

The familiar fairy of the same title revolves around a prince who needed to break a fairy’s curse. The prince would only break this spell if a woman would come to love him despite his hideous form. And as he lay dying, the Beast received the love he needed so he could return to his human form.

A 1987show inspired by the fairy tale had no such ending. Instead of having a princely human form, the Beast remained as he was so his inner qualities could stand out. This beloved show was the inspiration of the new series starring Kreuk and Ryan.

If the original series ended that way, what ending awaits Cat and Vincent this time?

A spell that must be broken

Like the fairy tale’s Beast, Vincent also faces a curse. This time, however, he is not dealing with an enchantress. Vincent struggles with the effects of an experiment which caused mutations in his body and gave him superhuman strength.

Vincent and many others used for the experiment were to be sent to Afghanistan to win the war in that country. When the experiment turned awry, the government ordered the immediate deaths of the experiment’s subjects.

While struggling with the beastlike qualities brought about by the experiment, Vincent is then forced to run from those who would kill him.

If one would follow the fairy tale’s original plot, reversing the mutation’s effects could be Vincent’s own transformation and redemption. In the show however, Vincent found himself asking if he in fact wanted to reverse the experiment’s effects or not, when finally faced with a cure.

Not a damsel in distress

One compelling element of the show is how it inverts the tired ‘Beauty’ trope of the old stories. While the fairy tale portrayed Beauty as a prisoner, Kristin Kreuk’s Cat Chandler is anything but a typical damsel in distress.

A detective working for the New York Police Department, Cat is trying to solve the mystery of her mother’s murder—a case that is linked to the experiment performed on Vincent. This unsolved mystery then led Cat to Vincent and the two developed a romance.

But while the two came to love each other, a bitter undercurrent of conflict runs throughout the relationship. Overcoming the odds, Cat and Vincent married despite their personal clashes and the outside forces threatening to pull them apart.

The marriage of the prince and his lady is often the beginning of an idyllic ‘happily ever after’ in fairytales. This was not so for Vincent and Cat as they continued their flight from Vincent’s would-be captors and killers.

Finding themselves on the opposite side of the law, Cat has to find ways to lead these hostile away from Vincent.

‘Love is a battlefield’

This refusal to stick to old fairy tale conventions is the beating heart of the new show. Much like real life, there are no tidy endings, and no single character coming to the rescue of another.

‘Ever after’ then is not just about a prince rescuing a distressed damsel or a princess breaking away from an evil curse. The show doesn’t shy away from the many dangers that a forbidden love brings.

The big question remains: will Vincent finally reclaim his humanity by the series’ end? Yet while this moment has yet to happen, one can say his humanity had already been restored when Cat came into his life.

Perhaps the change that mattered most was not the cure to his condition but Cat’s willingness to love him, flaws and all.

Catch Beauty and the Beast’s series finale on August 31, 9:00PM at RTL CBS Entertainment HD.
