MMFF 2020 stars invite OFWs to watch this year’s films online

The Metro Manila Film Festival (MMFF) festival organizers held a “MMFF Zoom Roadshow” with Pinoy celebrities to invite Filipinos from all over the world to watch this year’s line-up of top calibre films.

Celebrities Zanjoe Marudo, Charlie Dizon, Keann Johnson, Andrew E, Ritz Azul, Senator Jinggoy Estrada, Julia Estrada, Fumiya and Yamyam kicked off the online roadshow together with PCOO (Presidential Communications Operations Office) Director Pebbles Duque who hosted the online event. OFWs from Hawaii, the UK, Australia, UAE, Germany, Japan, Netherlands, Italy, USA, Trinidad and Tobago, and Hong Kong showed their support and were pleased to meet and greet the celebrity guests. The participants were also given a short demo on how to watch the MMFF films via UPSTREAM, the newest transactional video-on-demand (VOD) platform, and GMovies.

“A lot of Filipinos, OFWs most especially, will be postponing their homecoming due to the pandemic. While they will miss out on much of the traditional festivities back home, we want to bring them cheer by allowing them to enjoy this year’s MMFF anywhere in the world. Wherever they may be, Filipino Christmas continues to be felt with the MMFF,” said Director Duque.

“We are grateful to MMFF for allowing us to recreate this well-loved Christmas tradition of enjoying the MMFF films, especially for the OFWs who will be missing home this season. These films that deeply reflect Filipino values and culture can now be enjoyed online, anywhere in the world,” said Albert de Larrazabal, Globe’s Chief Commercial Officer.

The 46th edition of the MMFF via UPSTREAM and in partnership with GMovies opens on Christmas Day, December 25, 2020 until January 7, 2021.

This year, the MMFF has 10 official entries, a shift from the usual eight entries in the previous years. The titles cover a wider range of audiences especially now that the festival has moved online:

Joel Lamangan’s “Isa Pang Bahaghari” is an LGBTQ-themed family drama about an OFW (Phillip Salvador) returning home to reconnect with his estranged wife (Nora Aunor) and children (Zanjoe Marudo, Joseph Marco and Sanya Lopez).

Another LGBTQ-themed film in the roster is “The Boy Foretold by The Stars” produced by Clever Minds, Inc. starring Adrian Lindayag and Keann Johnson, who portray high school classmates whose friendship is tested when their feelings towards each other evolve.

For those who enjoy a good scare, Easy Ferrer’s “The Missing” is set in a haunted house in Japan. Produced by Regal Entertainment, the film features Joseph Marco, Ritz Azul and Miles Ocampo.

“Mang Kepweng: Ang Lihim ng Bandang Itim” is another horror film but with a bit of comedy. Produced by Cineko Productions and directed by Topel Lee, the film stars Vhong Navarro, Ritz Azul, Benjie Paras, Joross Gamboa, Ryan Bang and Ion Perez.

A staple in the holiday film genre is comedy and Al Tantay’s “Pakboys: Takusa” aims to make Pinoys laugh. Produced by Viva Entertainment, the film focuses on the infidelity of comedians Andrew E., Janno Gibbs, Dennis Padilla and Jerald Napoles.

If visual effects are what some are looking for, Christian Acuña’s fantasy-adventure, “Magikland”, is expected to appeal to young audiences. Produced by Peque Gallaga, Lore Reyes, and Brightlight Leisure Productions, the film features a young cast including Miggs Cuaderno, Elijah Alejo, Joshua Eugenio and Princess Aguilar.

Pinoys can also expect a bit of romance with Mac Alejandre’s “Tagpuan”. This movie features a love triangle starring Iza Calzado, Alfred Vargas and Shaina Magdayao. Written by Ricky Lee and shot in Hong Kong and New York, the film is produced by Alternative Vision Cinema.

Those who enjoy true stories might like “Suarez, The Healing Priest.” Directed by Joven Tan, the film is based on the life of Father Fernando Suarez. Produced by Saranggola Media Productions, the film stars John Arcilla, Dante Rivero, and Jin Macapagal.

Fresh from glowing reviews from its Japan and Estonia premieres, “Fan Girl”, the latest film from Antoinette Jadaone is about every fan girl’s fantasy of spending a night with their biggest celebrity idol. This was produced by ABS-CBN Films' Black Sheep, Globe Studios, Project 8, Epicmedia, and Crossword Productions with performances from newcomer Charlie Dizon and award-winning actor Paulo Avelino, who plays himself.

Lastly, OFWs are well-represented by Adolfo Alix, Jr’s’ “Coming Home.” Produced by Maverick Films, this is a drama about an OFW father(Jinggoy Estrada) who comes home to his unwelcoming family. The film also features Sylvia Sanchez, Edgar Allan Guzman, Martin del Rosario, Shaira Diaz, Vin Abrenica, Julian Estrada, and Jake Ejercito.

Through a partnership with UPSTREAM and Globe’s GMovies, the MMFF is bringing this year’s festival online as the official entries can be streamed by Filipinos via UPSTREAM in partnership with GMovies for only P250 per title, and $10 for Filipinos abroad.

UPSTREAM is likewise able to deliver a better viewing experience for customers while protecting the content creators’ intellectual property rights with the support of Globe’s #PlayItRight campaign. #PlayItRight is the telco company’s anti-piracy advocacy that helps protect the entertainment industry from illegal streaming and content piracy.

Tickets will be on sale locally on December 7 and internationally on December 18. Visit UPSTREAM.ph to know how to enjoy the MMFF online.

Regal, all set to offer a new kind of horror via Sitsit... "HAUNTED FOREST" targets thrill-seeking millennial viewers this Christmas

"We will surely be the number one choice of adventurous millennials this Christmas because 'Haunted Forest' was especially made not only for kids and Regal horror fans but primarily to the adventurous and thrill-seeking teenagers who would love to enjoy Christmas with their friends."

This was how the Regal Entertainment Inc. matriarch, Mother Lily Monteverde described her anticipation for the unique success that await Regal's biggest and scariest supernatural teen horror masterpiece and the only horror film in the Metro Manila Film Festival (MMFF) 2017 -- "Haunted Forest."

"We know that this year's lineup is mostly composed films starred by MMFF blockbuster veterans like Vice Ganda, Coco Martin and Vic Sotto," shared Mother Lily. "However, we believe that the festival and our moviegoers deserve something fresh and exciting. We want to give a chance to young talented actors who excellently gave life to a uniquely-Filipino yet world-class horror film crafted by no less than international award-wining director Ian Loreños."

Like Mother Lily, her daughter and seasoned producer Roselle Monteverde believes in the unique charm of the "Haunted Forest" to the moviegoers once MMFF opens on Monday, Christmas Day.
"Every Christmas, it has been part of MMFF viewers' long tradition to watch not just comedy but also horror films," said Roselle. "Kids, horror fans and most especially groups of friends always look forward to the extraordinary thrill and adventure that they experience while watching Regal's horror movies --- the unexplainable joy of sharing the scary and fun moments of the movie together with your barkada. And that's what makes 'Haunted Forest' unique for our young viewers."
Direk Ian further explained, "We assure you that this is not just your typical jump scare movie because 'Haunted Forest' is a film that you have to think about per scene in order for you to feel the horror."

"If you'll watch it with your whole barkada, you will all definitely feel like you are friends with the movie's main cast and you are one with them in solving the puzzle of the story and you will altogether get to know who Sitsit is."

Graded B by the Cinema Evaluation Board, "Haunted Forest" is written by Jeps Gallon and topbilled by some of this generation's best young actors, Jane Oineza, Jameson Blake, Maris Racal and Jon Lucas.

The story will revolve around the father-daughter relationship of ex-Manila policeman Aris (Raymart Santiago) and Nica (Jane) and the mysterious haunted forest where a dark creature called Sitsit resides.

"Meant To Beh" explores true love’s possibilities, proves true love stand the test of time

“Meant To Beh” the latest blockbuster film, as one of the eight official entries of the 2017 Metro Manila Film Festival.

“Meant To Beh” starring Vic Sotto and Dawn Zulueta, Gabbi Garcia, JC Santos, and Baby Baste. Directed by Chris Martinez, Meant to Beh is a story about family, values, love and good vibes.

Middle-aged couple Antonio (Vic) and Andrea Balatbat (Dawn) try their best to raise their three children, Christian (JC Santos), Alex (Gabbi Garcia), and Riley (Baby Baste).

The Balatbats have a perfect family setup despite the fact that the couple was only forced by their parents to get married when they were younger. Ten-years-in-the-making MMFF 2016 entry “Saving Sally” gets A rating from Cinema Evaluation Board

A movie about love, comic books, and the monsters in our heads, “Saving Sally” is one of the eight entries in this year’s December film festival.

The Metro Manila Film Festival Screening Committee describes “Saving Sally” “a typical youthful love story replete with child-like elements as applied through 2D animation.”

It took over ten years to make but the Cinema Evaluation Board gave an A rating to the directorial debut of Avid Liongoren, a motion picture that weaves a young romantic story set in wonderful 2D animation hues.

"Saving Sally" has long been in the drawing board, and began shooting as early as 2005. That's how long the film's lead, Enzo Marcos, waited for a chance for the film to be shown in theaters.

“Saving Sally” was mounted by a small team of young animators led by its director Avid Liongoren who has directed for television and TV commercials.

After initial filming in 2005, the project came to a halt due to lack of funding. French film producer Alain de la Mata, who was impressed with the work of film director Avid, decided to come in and help with production.

How the film was put together is also anything but typical. You might as well call it “epic.”

Production came into full swing in 2010 on a blue screen, which was later replaced with a stylized Manila and 2D animated monsters created by Liongoren and his team of artists at Rocketsheep. Every frame, every background, every piece of art was painstakingly made.
“What we lacked in manpower, we made up for with love in every single frame. We spent countless hours checking and rechecking every detail,” shares Direk Avid.

The result is ready to be served come December 25. "Saving Sally" as director Liongoren puts it is "a familiar coming-of-age story told with super- stylized visuals. The project blends live action, 2d animation and an abundance of warm, fuzzy feelings to create a totally unique and lovable little film."

Get ready to be dazzled and mesmerized, children, millennials, and the young-at-heart. “Saving Sally” will make you believe in love, comic books, and the monsters in our heads all over again.

Cheer on as Marty (Enzo Marcos), an aspiring comic book artist pines for his best friend Sally (played by Rhian Ramos), a gadget inventor. Sally, however, has monsters for parents and an inconsiderate boyfriend (TJ Trinidad). In Marty’s fantasies, he conjures up ways of defending the love of his life from the big bad world.

At its very heart, “Saving Sally” is a simple story about love and never, ever giving up told in a unique way that combines live action & vivid kaleidoscope-colored animation.

“Saving Sally” stars Rhian Ramos, Enzo Marcos, TJ Trinidad, Bodjie Pascua, Carme Sanchez, Sharmaine Centenera Buencamino, Archie Adamos.

Rated Parental Guidance by the MTRCB.

Bringing you a tale of young love, monsters and how dreams really can come true, "Saving Sally" opens this Christmas in cinemas nationwide.
