Samsung’s Solve for Tomorrow invites STEM students to propose tech solutions for social impact
Launched for the first time in the Philippines, Samsung’s Solve for Tomorrow aims to unleash the creativity and potential of STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics) students in discovering social solutions with the use of technology. In partnership with the Department of Education (DepEd) and the Department of Science and Technology (DOST), Solve for Tomorrow aims to provide opportunities for top students to transform emerging ideas into action and unlock their full potential as future leaders. This global program has successfully helped over 2 million people and has reached beyond the boundaries of 50 other countries, including the Philippines, as the latest addition this 2023.
Samsung is inviting public science high school students from Grades 8 to 10 to showcase their groundbreaking ideas that can positively impact communities and create a better tomorrow. Participating schools can form teams with a maximum of four (4) students and one (1) faculty advisor for every entry. There will be no limit to how many teams can join per school.
The team should identify a local community or an environmental sustainability problem and provide a design proposal outlining sustainable and feasible solutions with the help of technology. The proposal can be in a slide presentation format (5 slides maximum) or a Word document (2,500 words maximum). After completing the proposal, teams must submit their entry via the Solve for Tomorrow registration site before or on November 3, 2023.
Ten shortlisted teams will have a chance to be coached by Samsung experts, and present their proposals to an esteemed board of judges. The Grand Prize winner will receive Samsung devices worth up to ₱650,000 for their school, ₱190,000 worth of Samsung devices for the team and their teacher adviser, ₱100,000 cash prize for team members, and P 20,000 cash prize for faculty adviser. Full mechanics and prizes can be found on the official website.
Here are just some of the solutions developed by winners of Samsung’s Solve for Tomorrow from around the world.
Looking for a
study buddy? TAZ’s App got your back
Indeed, wherever young innovators triumph, each convenes to develop solutions for a better tomorrow. TAZ, the winning team from Malaysia in 2021, from St. Francis Institution, Malacca, developed an app that helps Malaysian students around the country to connect with study buddies who share similar interests and help them acquire access to a variety of learning materials nationwide and equip their peers with time management tips.
PathFinder
System: Key to safer spaces in schools
A gunshot detection and evacuation system was one of the 2022 Solve for Tomorrow’s grand prize winners in the United States. Designed by students from Porter High School, Texas, the PathFinder system addresses crowd stampedes caused by a threat of an active shooter. It aims to ensure students' safety inside their school and ease the fear of school shootings. It essentially eradicates false alarms and its LED lights change color to indicate the proximity of danger while pointing out the safest way out. It was one of the smartest prototypes proposed in the competition, as it is highly functional and sustainable.
Support
athletes during competitions with the Human Health Band
With an innovation that aimed to assist athletes on their road to victory, Strawberry Crest High School from Dover, Florida, was awarded one of the four grand-winners for Solve for Tomorrow 2023. With a Human Health Band designed to monitor an athlete’s body temperature and prevent heat-related deaths, the team conducted thorough research on making this project feasible and sustainable to save lives using recycled fabrics and developed software.
Join Samsung in its mission to help build a better
future and be part of the country’s very first Solve for Tomorrow competition.
The deadline for submission is November
03, 2023. Interested applicants can learn more and submit their entries at
the Samsung Solve for Tomorrow site: https://www.samsung.com/ph/solve-for-tomorrow/

Education campaign My Dream in a Shoebox answers call for future-ready classrooms
In the Basic Education Report (BER), the Department of Education (DepEd) pointed out the difficulties it faces in providing basic education to Filipino students, which includes school facilities and learning resources.
These issues were also echoed by President Ferdinand Marcos Jr. in his recent State of the Nation Address where his solution to the age-old problem is that “schools and facilities are being retrofitted to become ready for the future—ready for hybrid and high-tech learning, and also climate-ready and disaster-proof.”
With a commitment to bridge the digital gap in education, My Dream in a Shoebox (MDIAS), the annual education campaign led by strategic marketing agency TeamAsia, together with Yellow Boat of Hope Foundation (YBH), is taking action to contribute to the realization of future-ready classrooms. Through the establishment of educational hubs or e-hubs in some of the Philippines’ remotest areas, an initiative by YBH, kids will get access to equipment and supplies they need for face-to-face learning: six computers, a year’s worth of internet service, a printer and printing materials, school supplies, face masks, alcohol, and a budget for logistical costs.
Bea Lim, managing director of TeamAsia and chief dream builder of MDIAS, expressed her dedication to this cause, “As we move forward into an era marked by technological advancements, it’s imperative that we equip our students with the means to succeed. Our e-hub donations represent our commitment to creating future-ready classrooms that foster creativity, critical thinking, and collaboration. By providing these resources, we are empowering students to dream big and achieve even bigger.”
According to Dr. Anton Mari Lim, YBH’s co-founder, “We are proud to work alongside My Dream in a Shoebox to empower children and transform their #BiggerDreams into a bigger and brighter reality. These e-hubs are not just technological tools, but bridges to opportunities, empowerment, and a brighter future.” Thus, YBH is committed to building more opportunities or avenues for the children.
Aside from e-hubs, MDIAS also aims to raise P250,000 from donations in order to help 10 scholars in each of its 10 partner communities across the Philippines. Donations will be used to cover the costs of the children’s school supplies and hygiene kits with face masks and alcohol.
If you’re interested to take part in this year’s MDIAS campaign, follow these steps to donate:
Visit the My Dream in a Shoebox website at https://shoeboxcampaign.teamasia.com/
Click the ‘Donate Now’ button.
Choose which of the causes you would like to donate to: Donate a Dream Kit, Support a Scholar, or Fund an e-hub. You can also donate to all!
If you wish to donate a dream kit, the amount is P300. To fund an e-hub, you can input the amount you would like to donate and click “Make a Donation.” But if you want to support a scholar or a community, you may choose to donate PHP2,500 or PHP25,000, respectively.
Review your cart and hit ‘Proceed to Checkout.’
Fill up the billing form, choose your mode of payment, click ‘Place Order.’
“We can all do our own part—filling up a shoe box with supplies and sending it over, donating money to support a scholar, or even the simple act of sharing posts to our networks and friends to encourage them to donate or volunteer,” said Bea Lim. “As someone told me before, which has now become our thrust and belief, ‘Hangga’t may bata na nangangarap at nangangailangan, nandoon ang My Dream in a Shoebox.’”
Make a donation now and see how small efforts can make a big impact on the youth and the community. To know more about the campaign, visit the website shoeboxcampaign.teamasia.com or contact the organizers at shoebox@teamasia.com.

Education consumes 51% of Filipino household income—WorldRemit
More than 51% of a Filipino household’s monthly income goes to covering educational costs, a new report by WorldRemit revealed.
The digital cross-borders app released its third year of global data and findings to understand how the cost of school supplies impact families around the world. The price of uniforms, stationery, and extra supplies like bags across 21 countries were compared from 2022 to 2023.
In the Philippines, the cost of school supplies rose by 16%.
“We have to think about frequency of use in relation to these school supplies. As children are more likely to go through stationery like a pencil quicker than wearing down a uniform, the higher cost adds up over time. And if there is more than one student in a household, these costs multiply accordingly,” said Earl Melivo, Head of Asia Pacific at WorldRemit.
According to Melivo, more remittances are sent from June and July to pay for tuition fees and school supplies in time for the opening of classes in August.
Amid global economic circumstances, 40% of observed countries are expected to pay more than their monthly income on school supplies. In countries outside of North America, Europe, and Australia, cost differences were far more drastic, where yearly changes averaged an increase of 78%.
Data from the United Nations states that 1 in 9 people worldwide rely on money sent from friends and relatives who have migrated abroad for work. According to Social Weather Stations, 7% of Filipino households have a family member working as an OFW, 75% say these OFWs regularly send money back home.
As of 2022, the Philippines had the third highest remittance inflows in the Asia and Pacific region at 11%.
“Education is one
of the top reasons people send money back home. For Filipino families,
especially those whose monthly income just suffices for daily needs,
remittances from overseas supplement their ability to afford essential school
supplies, as well as manage steep costs like tuition, transportation and
childcare,” said Melivo.
